Book Review #11: Night

It's been awhile since I did one of these...

This book is called Night by Elie Wiesel. It is a memoir on the author's experience in the World War II camps. (A memoir is a narrative composed from personal experience during their life.) The story really reminds readers of the terror the Jewish had to go through during the war.

Night is recommended for young adults and adults who can handle reading about real-life suffering. This is a work of nonfiction which tells about events that the author suffered through during his stay at the camps. If you are uncomfortable with the camps or World War II itself, you probably shouldn't read this book.

Wiesel starts his story before he was taken away from his home. He lived in a town known as Sighet. He was a happy boy that was proud of his religion. Then one day, the Germans came and took all the Jews out of their homes and to the camps. Wiesel describes everything that he experienced during his journey between life and death. Along the way, Wiesel has to decide to choose between survival or his fate.

This was a very terrifying story to me. It brought me to a greater reality about World War II. I've always learned about what happened but this was deeper. It wasn't about statistics but more of the terror and suffering the Jewish felt. That really made me think of humanity... Humans are great but they can be cruel to each other. It is a very depressing book so I would be careful when you decide to read this.Although it is sad, it will be a story you will never forget.

Book Review #10: The Hunger Games Triology

Since this is my 10th book review... I decided to do something special that practically everyone knows about! This book review is about Suzanne Collins' famous series... The Hunger Games Triology. As most of you know, HP Fan has once posted about the Hunger Games in one of her "HPF Books." I'll be featuring more on the Triology.
Hunger Games Triology

This triology is recommended for young adults who want a sense of adventure and science fiction. It involves some romance, brutal death scenes, and horrific descriptions.

Now, imagine if the United States turned into a completely new places, known as Panem... a country where dictatorship rules and where if you aren't from the Capitol, you suffer. Well, Katniss, a young girl, lives in the worse part of Panem, District 12. There are 12 different districts that provide the Capitol different needs. Of course, this type of dicatorship was unfair and years before, the Districts had a rebellion. It failed and resulted in the creation of The Hunger Games.

As a reminder to the Districts about the rebellion, each year, they host the Hunger Games where 1 boy and 1 girl shall be a tribute and enter a game of death... Katniss has no idea what she got herself into but was it fate that she entered Panem or bad luck? Either way, the Odds were not in her favor...

I loved this triology but my favorite book of it has to be the first one, The Hunger Games. I guess it's because as the books went on, I missed the first story of how Katniss entered into the mess. There are times in the triology where I did not expect things to happen, though! If you haven't read the triology, I recommend you give it a try!

Anyways, Happy Reading!

Book Review #9: The Princess Academy

This book review is about The Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. This book has won a Newberry Honor award and it's such a heart-warming story!

Princess Academy
(Cover Art may be different)
The Princess Academy is recommended for anyone who has a taste of realistic-fiction and likes a good story. There is slight romance, some violence, and it takes place in a "medieval" setting (kings, princesses, horse-drawn carriages, traders, etc.)

The main character is Miri. A girl that lives in Mount Eskel, where almost everyone works at the quarries but herself. She has always dreamed of working in the quarries along with the villagers and her sister and father despite her size. Then, word comes the prince, a lowlander, will be choosing his bride-to-be in Mount Eskel and in order for him to choose, they'd be building an Academy for the young girls of Mout Eskel to learn how to be a princess. Along the way, Miri learns about friendship, teamwork, competition, adventure through threatening situations, and a bit of love.

After reading this book, I know why it was given a Newberry Award. I could not put the book down because I wanted to know who was to become Princess and how Miri was doing at the Academy! The ending was unexpected though, I have to say. It's amazing how one change, like building a school, can change the villager's lives!

I hope you will try reading this book if you haven't already. Remember, if you have any books that you'd like me to feature/review, feel free to comment below and tell me!

Book Review #8: Wild Magic

This book review is about Tamora Pierce's book, Wild Magic. This is the first book of The Immortals series. This is one of my favorite books to read. It's full of adventure, fantasy, and... magic!

Wild Magic (There are different verisons
of the cover art.)
Wlid Magic is recommended for young adults with that wants a taste of fantasy and adventure. There is some violence involving fighting and some of the descriptions are frightening but it's a really good book. It is also put in a "medival" setting (just warning everyone.)

This book is about a young girl named Daine. She's has a huge knack with animals and is a great archer. Daine has been an orphan for a long time and is hoping to find a better future... and it all starts with meeting a horsetaker for the Queen's Riders. Along her journey she finds out about creatures, abilities, knowledge, and more that she's never known of... including that she contained a rare ability. A girl able to talk to animals, meeting strange creatures of the immortal, and living a brand new setting. What more could you ask for?

I absolutely love this book. This is actually my second time reading it and I noticed how much I forgot about the actual story. It is an adventure that I would love to go on though and I could not put the book down! Hopefully you check the book out and it will become a favorite of yours too!

Book Review #7: Demon Princess, Reign or Shine

This is a book review about, Demon Princess; Reign or Shine by Michelle Rowen. This is the first book of the "Demon Princess" series and I absolutely loved it! This is a great book for that teenage princess that's always into mischief. Even if you aren't, if you are up to a little romance, adventure, and becoming a Demon Princess, this is for you! Just when you had the best day of your life... your life goes crumbling...

This is recommended for teens that can handle some romance and evil spirits. (Think won't be a problem for those that have read books about Vampires or evil mystic creatures.) This is a narrative story which means that the narrator/main character (Nikki) tells the story.

No one ever has a perfect start, right? Well, Nikki didn't have a good start even before she was born. Her father disappeared out of the blue before Nikki even emerged to the world and that just made Nikki's world tougher. Her mother has been remarrying ever since and "3rd time is the charm?" I don't think so. Every time, Nikki's mom married someone new, they had to move so Nikki never got settled in and hardly ever fit. She finds a best friend then 2 months later... Nikki's life changed forever.

I normally don't go for these types of stories with the "demons" but this book just seemed interesting.... but then, I like almost all books. You've seen lots of books about vampires but it's not everyday that you see demons! Well, I hope you check this book out and remember, if you have any books that you'd like me to do a review on, be free to comment and tell me the book(s) you'd like me to check out! (I need to do more reviews on tween books so help me out!)

Book Review #6: Flipped

I just recently finished the book, Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. I really loved it even though I already knew most of the story. It's a story about love, forgiveness, and friendship. Who knew what a tree, chicken eggs, a yard, and baskets could do to Juli Baker and Bryce Lowski?

This is a perfect book for teens or matured kids that like conflict and real-life situations. It's a "He said, She said," type of book so that means that the narrator is different for each chapter. I really liked that style because it give a point of view for both Juli and Bryce.

Juli Baker... a girl that has lived in the neighborhood since she was born. When she first saw Bryce, she just Flipped. "It was something about those eyes," those blue eyes. Someday, she'd hope for that first kiss with Bryce Lowski.

Bryce... a boy that moved in and a girl already started liking him. Juli would not leave him alone! After years of avoiding her, it was time to take action. Then, they both flip... what could've caused Juli Baker to stop the chase and for Bryce to start it? Read the book to find out!

In 2010, a movie was made that was based off of this novel. So, I found out about the movie before the book but suprisingly, it was really similar which I liked since many novel based movies get the story incorrect. (Percy Jackson would be an example...) I really enjoyed the movie as much as the book! For more information about the movie, visit this link.

Happy Reading! I hope you "Flipped" for this book and movie just like I did!

Book Review #5: Serpent Tide

I've read this book awhile ago but never got the chance to review it yet! Well, here it is!

Serpent Tide is definitely one of my absolute favorites! It's a huge adventure. It's mainly about a boy... oh! I shouldn't spoil it. Well, this book has mostly adventure, mystery, and romance. Who knew what could happen to one of the richest boys in the world?

The main character is Wesley. His mother is very rich and very protective of Wesley, but all he ever wants is to have an adventure and be just like his role model, The Snake Stalker. One day, he finds something that could change his life forever.

This book is recommended for mostly teens or those that can handle romance and violence. The author, K.L. Fogg is an amazing writer! She knows so much about snakes and has a huge imagination. I don't know how she could write books like that but I loved it! If you want to know more about the book, you can visit her website: http://serpenttide.com/index.html

Hope you like it!

Book Review #4: I So Don't Do Famous

I apologize for not doing book reviews for such a long time. School comes before reading. -.-

Well, I finished I So Don't Do Famous by Barrie Summy. To be honest, I really enjoyed this book. It is about moderate length and it's perfect for teens (especially girls!)

What do you if you write an essay to win a trip to Hollywood and found out that a crime was there and you might have help cause it?! Well, that's what Sherry (Sherlock) did. The book is full of drama, mystery, true love, stars, and ghosts.

The story takes place in, where else? HOLLYWOOD! Barrie Summy gave an amazing description of where to go and things around there. So, read the book to help you plan out some stuff to do while your in Hollywood! If you never been to Hollywood, this book will take you there for free!

This is Barrie Summy's 4th book in her I don't do series. This was actually my first book ever that I read from Ms. Summy and I really enjoyed it! Next time I'm going to the library, definitely picking up her other books! You can learn more about Barrie Summy at her website: http://barriesummy.blogspot.com/ (Hey, she has a blogger too! It looks better then mine. Maybe giving some pointers??)

Well, happy reading!!

Book Review #3: Ever

I have just recently finished reading Ever by Gail Carson Levine. This book is about how a god named Olus falls in love for a mortal named Kezi. They soon meet each other and fall madly in love but Kezi is soon to die. She has to find a way to stay alive and be with her love. The god has to help her survive by trying to over come fears.

I really liked this book because it talks a lot about bravery and it has a unique tale. I recommend this book for teens that can handle romance and adventure. This book was one that I could not put down!! (Which doesn't happen a lot.)

Here's the description in the book:
Falling in love is easy..... even for Kezi, though she knows her days are numbered. And head-over-heels, come-what-may love is inevitable if her heart's desire is Olus, the Akkan god of the winds. But accepting death is hared, especially when romance is new. Love brings Kezi the will to fight her fate. Love gives Olus the strength to confront his fears. She questions her faith and seeks truth in dark places. He suffers a god's trial when she needs a champion. Together-- and apart-- they encounter spiders with webs of iron, the cruel lord of the land of the dead, the mysterious god of destiny, and the tests of the Akkan gods. If they succeed, they will be together; but if they fail, Olus will have to endure the ultimate loss, and Kezi will have to make the supreme sacrifice.

Gail Carson Levine has been writing for all her life. She's written many books and even got a Newbery Honor award for Ella Enchanted. She's also written princess princess tale books (which I've read.) You can visit her website at http://www.gailcarsonlevinebooks.com/

I need more book reviews!! Please comment and tell me some of your favorite books and I might feature it in the next book review!!

Book Review #2: Ingo

I have just finished reading Ingo by Helen Dunmore. This book talks a lot about the sea and it's an amazing story. It's about a girl name Sapphire. She has a wonderful family and everything is just how she wants it until one night, her father sailed off to the sea and just disappeared. After years, Sapphy and her brother, Conor, starts hearing the ocean call to them. It's like a pull of a magnet from the ocean. That's when she discovers the world of Ingo. This book is perfect for those that like adventure, fantasy, and sea life. Ingo is just the first book of  The Ingo Chronicles. This book is mostly recommended for ages 10 and up.

Here's the description:
By the Cornwall coast where Sapphire lives with her family, it's easy to hear the call of the sea. Too easy. When the sea called to Sapphy's father, he vanished from her life. When the sea called to her brother, he started disappearing for hours on end. And now the sea is calling to Sapphy, and she feels its pull more strongly than she's ever felt anything in her life. In a novel full of longing, mystery, and magic, Helen Dunmore takes us to a new world that has the power both to captivate and to destroy. At the waterline, the worlds of Air and Ingo meet. Sappy and her brother, Conor, find themselves at the boundary between these worlds, in a place of danger and amazing discoveries.

If you want to read the next book of the Ingo Chronicles, look for Tide Knot.

Book Review #1: Hawksmaid

From now on, I will do book reviews. This is the first one! I'll just talk about the book, author, and anything else related.

I just finished reading Hawksmaid by Kathryn Lasky. It was really interesting. It was pretty much a story of Robin Hood, the Merry Men, and Maid Marian. It starts off of how their childhood life then, as outlaws. Kathryn Lasky really made an interesting story of Robin Hood. This was a very interesting book. I would definitely recommend it for people that likes Robin Hood, hawks, and ages 10 and up.

Here's the description:
Matty has been raised to dance well, embroider exquisitely, and marry nobly. But when Matty's mother is murdered before her very eyes and her father, a nobleman, is reduced to poverty, Matty's life changes. As the daughter of Nottingham's most famous falconer, she finds a new destiny in the hawks her father keeps. She begins to understand their thoughts and even speak their language. the beautiful merlin Marigold becomes Matty's closest winged companion and her fiercest ally..... You thought that you knew the legend, but this is the untold story.

If you don't know who Kathryn Lasky is, she is the author of the  very popular series: Guardians of Ga'hoole. She does lots of research for her books. She would study the animals' behavior and how they act.
